Agriculture & land
Part I — the engine
What it shows
The consolidation of Dutch farming — holdings down sharply over decades while land in agricultural use shrank far more slowly, meaning ever-larger farms on roughly the same land, and what that implies for how the countryside is used.
What it cannot prove
Whether consolidation is good or bad — it reflects productivity and scale economics as much as policy pressure. Farm counts say nothing about output value (NL remains a top agri-exporter), animal welfare, or emissions per hectare; those need their own indicators.
