What it shows

Whether the business population is renewing itself — firm births and deaths, and the share of firms that actually employ people. The Netherlands' firm count is inflated by Europe's highest solo-self-employment rate, which is why employer enterprises are tracked separately.

What it cannot prove

The quality of dynamism. A registration is not a livelihood; firm births include false starts and fiscal constructions (a KVK registration is not an enterprise birth in the statistical sense — definitions differ). High churn can signal vitality or precarity.
