The median hides how many people lose: in 2018 the median change was +0.3% while nearly half of all persons saw their purchasing power fall — a positive national figure is fully compatible with millions going backwards.

One national inflation rate hides the renter–homeowner gap: renters faced cumulatively more than five percentage points more inflation than homeowners over 2015–2024, so purchasing-power figures built on average inflation flatter renters' reality — and renters are disproportionately lower-income.
