Every statistic embodies method choices, and the substantive critiques of those choices are part of understanding the number. These are documented positions — each linked to who makes it. Listing a criticism is not endorsing it; we take no side.
The punctuality figure counts only journeys on routes that ran on at least 20 different days and at least 100 times in the preceding 100 days — infrequent or heavily disrupted routes fall below the threshold and drop out of the calculation.

Under the 2025–2033 rail concession the formal performance norms use 3- and 10-minute delay thresholds; the 5-minute series shown here continues as an information indicator without a contractual target attached to it.
